Woman Arrested Outside Apartments for Waving Two Knives at Authorities

SAN RAFAEL — A woman carrying knives was apprehended outside a Bayview Street apartment complex. She was arrested for allegedly waving two knives at authorities in a threatening manner.
Police were dispatched to the apartment complex on August 14 to check on the woman’s welfare. When officers arrived shortly before 6 p.m., she refused to drop two knives during a standoff.
The police were there to assist mental health counselors were who attempting to contact the woman. She was located outside the 215 Bayview Apartments, pushing a shopping cart in a parking lot.
When the police approached her, she allegedly began waving two fixed-blade knives at the officers and the counselors. Additional officers were dispatched to the scene to assist with crisis negotiations and keep onlookers safely away.
Patience prevailed and no one was injured. Although it took 15 tense minutes of negotiating, before the woman was finally convinced to drop the knives.
After the situation was de-escalated, the woman identified as 51-year-old Sherry M. Petrakis was arrested. Petrakis was booked on open charges at Marin County Jail, where she remains in lieu of $50,000 bond.
Petrakis has no prior arrest record, but now she faces two felony charges:
• Assault with a deadly weapon (not a firearm) likely to cause great bodily injury
• Obstructing an executive officer.
In addition, Petrakis faces three charges for misdemeanors:
• Exhibiting a deadly weapon (not a firearm)
• Obstructing or resisting a public officer
• Violation of probation
