DOS PALOS – Deputies with the Merced County Sheriff’s Office went to a residence on September 8th to arrest a man after he violated a restraining order.
The suspect, hiding in shrubbery nearby, instead shot and hit Sergeant Clint Landrum in the vest and leg.
51-year-old Guadalupe Lopez-Herrera, not a legal citizen of the US, escaped at first. The ensuing search for the shooter encompassed Dos Palos, Firebaugh and Highway 152 to Chowchilla.
The next day officers located Herrera in Paso Robles, driving a stolen GMC Sierra and a chase ensued. The chase often reached 120 m.p.h. and eventually ended along Interstate 5 near Harris Ranch. The suspect shot at officers again before a K-9 assisted in arresting him.
Merced Sheriff Van Warnkle said, “This person is not a legal citizen within the United States. We had him in our custody in January of this year. And because of the folks in Sacramento limiting our ability to cooperate with ICE, we could not turn him over.”
Herrera has a history of arrests – October 27, 2017; October 18, 2017; April 11, 2017; and April 6, 2017.
