A six-week old baby girl was pronounced dead at Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera on June 30, 2008.
The cause of death was determined to be homicide via blunt force trauma to the head. The Kingsburg Police Department’s initial investigation did not result in a filing by the Fresno County District Attorney and for 11 years there were no arrests.
In 2016, it was re-evaluated by Kingsburg police and in October of 2018 Kingsburg detectives picked up the case once more.
For one year, detectives actively worked on the case, resulting in Fresno County Superior Court issuing an arrest warrant on October 29, 2019 for 32-year old Jose David Cerna, the child’s father.
Cerna was arrested on October 30, 2019 by Long Beach Police and turned over to Kingsburg detectives. He was booked into the Fresno County Jail and faces murder charges.
He remains in custody at the Fresno County Jail at the time of this writing.
