CAMPBELL – The Campbell Police Department has made an arrest of a subject named by police as the “prolific Craigslist rental scammer,” wanted for scamming would-be renters by placing phony ads on craigslist.com for those wishing to rent an apartment.
With more than six unsuspecting victims, the brazen scheme to defraud renters had grown as the suspect would meet his victims at the perspective apartment and then ask for a cashiers check in the amount of $2,400 upfront to seal the deal. He would then give them a key to the apartment, once they paid.
According to Campbell Police, “Since June 2019, the Campbell Police Department has investigated six incidents of rental scams by the same suspect.” During the investigation the 23-year-old suspect, Robert Milo, placed multiple ads on craigslist.com, and in fact, he had collected as much as $18,000- dollars from unsuspecting victims seeking to rent an apartment offered by the suspect.
Prior to his arrest for defrauding renters, Milo faced multiple felony counts for writing bad checks in September of 2019. With the final report of a defrauded renter in October of 2019, police were determined to catch Milo in the act.
On November 5, 2019, police set up a sting in which they planned to meet Milo at an apartment he was using to bait victims. According to Campbell Police, “Milo was taken into custody and charged with three counts of fraud, one count of attempted fraud, three counts of writing fraudulent checks, one count of committing a felony while on supervised release, and one count of resisting arrest.”
Milo used three addresses, including 710 Nido Drive and 235 Union Ave in Campbell. The last address used was located at 3200 Payne Ave. in San Jose. If anyone has fallen victim to the suspect, you are encouraged to contact the 24-hour dispatch center at (408) 866-2101 or the Investigations Unit at (408) 871-5190.
