SAN LEANDRO — An 18-year-old man in custody is accused of murdering his mother’s boyfriend. His mother witnessed the fatal stabbing, before her son took her car and fled from the scene.
Authorities are still investigating to determine the motive behind the slaying of the 62-year-old man. First responders found the victim suffering from several stab wounds, and he was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital.
The suspect recently moved into his mother’s home, after spending years living with his father. The stabbing occurred on February 7 at approximately 11:30 p.m. at a residence located on the 500 block of Beverly Avenue.
Detectives followed leads that indicated he was possibly in San Francisco. San Leandro police located him driving eastbound on the Bay Bridge at 3:40 a.m.
Efforts to pull over the car went unheeded, and several police cars pursued the suspect to Dublin and Castro Valley. Police chased him with sirens blaring for 20 minutes.
Bothwellmitlitsk was finally stopped on westbound Interstate 580 in Castro Valley. He was arrested at 4 a.m., without further incident. Bothwellmitlitsk remains in custody at Santa Rita Jail with bond for release denied, pending a plea hearing on February 21.
San Leandro police Lt. Isaac Benabou said in a prepared statement. “This was a violent and seemingly unprovoked incident by a dangerous individual who needed to be caught quickly.”
Bothwellmitlitsk is charged with murder, vehicle theft, use of a deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury.
