Homeless Man Arrested for Sexually Assaulting a Woman during a Fitness Class

FREMONT — A homeless man was arrested for sexually assaulting a woman during a fitness class at a gym. The suspect was taken into custody with help from another gym patron who came to the woman’s aid.
This incident occurred at 24 Hour Fitness located in the Gateway Plaza shopping mall on Paseo Padre Parkway. The victim was assaulted on February 17 at 6:20 p.m. in front of several other gym members.
The woman was doing push-ups, when without warning a man entered a group exercise class. He approached the victim, shoved her down on the floor and pulled off her clothing.
The suspect identified as 33-year-old Jonathan Anderson, is a transient who lives in Fremont. Anderson who stands 6 foot 1 inches tall, weighing 255 pounds, allegedly attempted to sexually assault the woman.
As she screamed for help, another gym member immediately pushed the suspect away from her. From there, the suspect was escorted to the front of the gym and detained by employees, until police arrived.
Fremont police Lt. Michael Tegner said in a prepared statement. “Their quick action stopped this horrendous assault and aided in the suspect’s quick arrest.”
Anderson was arrested for assault with intent to commit oral copulation, sexual assault and probation violation. He was on probation for previous DUI and grand theft convictions.
Based on the severity of the actions by Anderson, detectives are looking to speak with anyone who may have had recent contact with him. Detectives believe this may not have been the first time Anderson has assaulted someone in this manner
