WINTERS – On the afternoon of February 25 a man covered in blood approached someone at a gas station, made a strange statement, and then drove away.
Law enforcement was contacted in concern. Turns out that the vehicle the bloodied man was driving had just been reported stolen at a location where a residential burglary had also occurred.
Then a call came in from a residence near County Road 23 and County Road 86a about a man who entered a home there and threatened the the woman inside with a knife. The suspect demanded the woman’s car keys.
As deputies searched, they discovered the first car involved in this incident, now in a ditch.
Next, a report came in about an unsuccessful attempted carjacking outside of Esparto High School.
Finally, about 45 minutes after the initial call, deputies spotted 37-year-old Roland Engels driving the second stolen vehicle. He chose to have deputies pursue him a bit until he crashed in front of the Dollar General Store.
Engels even decided to try and run into the store, which was where deputies arrested him with the help of a Taser.
After being treated for his injuries, Engels was booked for burglary, robbery, assault, vehicle theft and attempted carjacking.
