Task Force’s Traffic Stop Nabs Known Gang Member with a Loaded Gun

POMONA – While patrolling the areas known to be frequented by gang members on 03/06/2020 at 22:33 PM, Pomona PD’s Major Crimes Task Force (MCTF) observed a car lacking a front license plate. Next, the driver failed to make a complete stop at a controlled intersection in the area of Kingsley Ave. and Indian Hill Blvd.
A traffic enforcement stop produced contact with the occupants, which included Pomona resident Efrain Huerta (28). Known to Officers, the documented gang member in the back seat appeared noticeably nervous.
And, “without provocation admitted to Officers he was in possession of drugs and paraphernalia,” said MCTF Sergeant M. Medellin. “Huerta showed the Officers what he admitted to and was removed from the car. It was then a loaded handgun was seen in plain sight in the area Huerta was seated.”
An immediate custody ensued, which produced Huerta’s sporting a gun holster. His arrest included the charges of –
11370.1 H&S – Possession of Firearm with Controlled Substance
25850(c)(6) PC – Carrying Loaded Unregistered Firearm
29800 (a)(1) PC – Felon in Possession of Firearm
30305 (a)(1) PC – Felon in Possession of Ammunition
The vehicle’s two other occupants were ID’d and released at the scene.
The Pomona PD’s MCTF is a specialized unit within the police department that is responsible for suppressing gang violence, investigating drug offenses and pursuing wanted persons. The team is comprised of two supervisors, five officers and two additional officers from the California Highway Patrol – Baldwin Park Office.
