Here’s a feel-good story from the Folsom Police Department official Facebook page about their newest officer –
“In late February, K-9 Dexter’s handler, Detective Scott Somersett, began his search for a drug detection dog. Detective Somersett is assigned to Folsom’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) and one of SIU’s primary functions is drug investigations.
Eventually, Detective Somersett contacted Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue and they had just the K-9 for the job, Dexter! 14-month-old Dexter was in four homes before he ended up at Homeward Bound because he just had too much energy. Fortunately for us, a dog with that much energy is perfect for working as a drug detection dog.
“I went and met Dexter the same day and immediately believed he was going to be a great fit. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention what a beautiful facility Homeward Bound has for the dogs in Elverta. The dogs had lots of space to run outside and it was very clear the folks working with the dogs cared about them deeply; they were all so genuinely excited to see Dexter get a home.”- Det. Somersett
The very next week Dexter and Detective Somersett left and started training. Dexter went through about six weeks of formal training before testing and becoming California Peace Officer Standards and Training certified as a drug detection dog.
“It was such a good feeling knowing that I was able to take a dog that had been through so many homes in such a short period of time and not only give him a home for good, but a mission too. Searching for drugs is not work for these dogs, but more like a game. Every day Dexter can’t wait to jump in the car to go into work because he loves what he does. “- Det. Somersett
We are so happy to have you Dexter!”
