“Over the past several weeks we have seen an increase in the discharging of illegal fireworks as we get closer to the July 4th holiday. We have also responded to numerous calls for service regarding the discharging of fireworks throughout the city during this time period. We want to remind everyone, the discharging of any fireworks is illegal in Cathedral City.

The police department is taking enforcement action against those who possesses and/or discharge fireworks. The noise produced from fireworks have negative effects on animals and disrupts the peace of neighborhoods throughout the community. Often times people are unable to distinguish the difference between fireworks and gunfire and calls pour into our communications center, tying up phone lines. Please do not discharge fireworks and know we are out searching for violators.

These are some of our recent cases of enforcement action regarding illegal fireworks:

On 05/27/2020, at 12:15am, an officer observed several subjects discharging fireworks in the area of Avenida Alvera & McCallum Way. Two adults were subsequently arrested and issued a citation for possession of illegal fireworks.

On 05/28/2020 at 10:20pm, officers responded to the area of Corral & Wishing Well Trail, regarding the illegal discharge of fireworks. Officers arrived in the area and maintained observation of a subject in front of a residence. The subject was observed discharging a mortar style firework and was subsequently arrested. He was issued a citation for the violation and released.

On 05/31/2020, at 12:20am, an officer on patrol observed an aerial firework in the area of Whispering Palms & Baristo Road. As the officer drove to the area he observed a male subject in possession of a mortar style firework. The subject was contacted and subsequently arrested for possession of illegal fireworks.

On 06/15/2020 at 1:50pm, Cathedral City Police detectives arrested an adult male for attempting to sell nine illegal boxes of aerial “Excalibur” fireworks and one aerial “Bite your tushy” fireworks. He was issued a citation and released.
