On July 14, 2020, a woman and her three children were getting in their vehicle in the parking lot of Camarena Health Center on East Almond Avenue in Madera.
As they did so, the woman’s estranged husband came up and began shooting. The woman laid across her children to protect them, taking several bullets to her body in the process.
She was transported to a hospital where she sadly passed away. The children were physically unharmed during the shooting.
Her estranged husband, 49-year old Julio Garay was arrested late Tuesday night in Marina, CA.
He was promptly returned to Madera to be booked for homicide.
Garay has a history of arrests due to domestic violence. Most recently, he was arrested in May in Chowchilla for a domestic violence charge against this same victim. He was out on bail at the time of this shooting.
Garay remains in the custody of Madera County Department of Corrections as of the time of this writing. He stands to be charged with murder, assault with a semiautomatic weapon, and three
counts of willful harm or injury to a child. He is being held without bail.
