“On February 14, 2013, MPD officers responded to a shooting in the 2400 block of Vera Cruz Avenue in Northeast Modesto. Officers located the victim, 20-year-old Erick Gomez, suffering from a gunshot wound. Gomez was transported to a local hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.
Detectives responded to the scene and took over the investigation which was found to be gang related.
The main suspect was identified as Giovani Barocio of Modesto, now 28 years old. Barocio fled to Mexico and was able to elude capture until now.
Detectives received assistance from the FBI and on July 16, 2020, Giovani Barocio was located and arrested in Guadalajara, Mexico. Barocio was returned to Modesto and was booked by detectives on charges of murder and gang related offenses.”
