On May 20, 2020 family of 54-year old Maria Alcocer Elias went to visit her at her East Britten
Avenue, Fresno home.
Upon entering, they found Maria unconscious and with visible injuries.
They called 911 for help. EMS confirmed Maria had passed away. Due to the visible trauma, the
Fresno County Sheriff’s Office was called to the home.
Deputies determined her death was a homicide and the Crime Scene Unit was called to assess the scene and collect evidence.
With collected evidence and witness accounts, detectives identified the suspect as 26-year old Jose
Juan Mata, Maria’s son.
As of the time of this writing, Jose Juan Mata remains in custody at the Fresno County Jail. His
bail is set at $1,000,000.
