FREMONT — A man in custody faces multiple charges for allegedly breaking into five homes as victims slept. The suspect also allegedly used credit cards stolen during these burglaries.
Various personal items, including car keys and four vehicles were stolen. The victims did not realize their homes were burglarized and vehicles stolen until they awoke the following morning.
Special operations detectives investigated five burglaries, reported between July 2 and July 15. These occurred in proximity on Lexington Street, Galludet Drive and Fremont Boulevard.
Detectives developed leads on the suspect, while investigating a pattern of purchases made with stolen credit cards. Surveillance was set up to monitor retail locations like those where such purchases were made.
On July 15, a patrol officer located one of the stolen vehicles, near Fremont Boulevard and Thornton Avenue. The officer attempted to stop a stolen Audi, but the suspect fled.
On July 16, undercover detectives spotted the stolen Audi outside an apartment building on the 4400 block of Central Avenue.
Later the same day, detectives arrested the suspect identified as 22-year-old Jonathan Jasiel Leal-Betancourt and searched his residence.
Leal-Betancourt was booked into Santa Rita Jail. He remains in custody in lieu of $200,000 bond, pending a plea hearing this week.
His charges include multiple counts of burglary while another person is present and first-degree burglary. Leal-Betancourt is also charged with receiving stolen property.
