The afternoon of October 17, 2020, a suicidal Miguel Carranza phoned 911 to report he had stabbed his mother.
When Fresno police officers arrived at the residence on the 4100 block of East Balch, Carranza refused to come out of the house. After nearly an hour, he walked to the front yard, knife in hand.
Covered in blood, the 22-year old refused to surrender and continued to advance. Officers first used a less lethal approach, firing two rounds from a bean-bag gun, but this did not stop the advancing Carranza. He was apprehended when officers fired their duty weapons.
He was struck multiple times and rendered medical aid by officers and paramedics until his transport to a local hospital. He is in stable but guarded condition. When released from the hospital, Carranza will be
booked at the Fresno County Jail.
Officers found Carranza’s mother in the entry way of the residence. Their CPR attempts could not change her vital signs and she was determined deceased by medical personnel.
All officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave. Several agencies including Fresno Police Department Homicide Unit, the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office, the City of Fresno‘s Civil Liability Team and Fresno‘s Office of Independent Review are investigating the incident.
This time last year, Fresno had experienced 34 murders; this marks Fresno 48th murder of 2020.
