EL CENTRO – Dangerous narcotics were seized within hours of each other on the night of December 1st. In two separate events, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents began the first at approximately 10:45 PM, while driving in downtown Calexico near First Street.
An agent assigned to the Calexico Station observed a small oval package laying on the ground. When he exited his vehicle, he noticed it was an electrical tape-wrapped kettlebell. The abandoned kettlebell was seized and transported back to the Calexico Border Patrol Station for further processing, where it tested positive for characteristics of Methamphetamine.
“Agents were not able to identify any subjects involved in the incident,” said Macario Mora. “The total weight of the methamphetamine was approximately 1.078 pounds with an estimated value of $2,425.”
Just after midnight, the second incident went down when a grey Lexus sedan, occupied by a male and female, approached the Highway 86 checkpoint. The vehicle was referred to secondary inspection by Border Patrol Agents.
As the vehicle waited in secondary, a Border Patrol K-9 detection team altered to the car. Further discovery revealed “three vacuum packages hidden underneath a child’s car seat. Agents tested the packages with a narcotics testing kit,” said Mora. “The white substance inside two of the packages tested positive for the characteristics of fentanyl. The third package contained blue pills, which tested positive for the characteristics of oxycodone.”
The fentanyl weighed-in at approximately 2.27 pounds, with an estimated value of $25,750. The 982 oxycodone pills had an estimated value of $9,820.
El Centro Sector BP turned over the male driver and female passenger – both United States citizens – the vehicle, and the narcotics to the U. S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
