A report of shots fired brought Santa Maria Police Department officers to a local area residential address late in the afternoon of December 18th. According to Santa Maria PD spokesman Lt. Jesse Silva, when cops rolled up to the scene, they discovered 20-
year-old Santa Maria resident Kevin Nunez-Escamilla on the ground. Nunez-Escamill had suffered a fatal gunshot wound and was unresponsive.
As no suspect was found at the scene, an intensive investigation into the incident was promptly initiated. Less than a week later, SBSD Homicide Detectives “tracked the suspect shooter” to Tulare County. Working in concert with the Tulare County Sheriff’s
Department, on December 23 rd detectives identified and located 20-year-old Santa Maria resident Jesus Juarez Garcilazo.
Garcilazo was taken into custody and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail where he was booked “on suspicion of murder.” Less than 48 hours later, on December 24th.
Garcilazo was formerly charged with “murder with a sentencing enhancement for using a firearm and causing great bodily injury.
Garcilazo remains in custody at Santa Barbara County Jail, with his bail set at $3,000,000.
