BERKELEY — Jealousy apparently led to the downfall of 32-year-old Losvel C. Bethea. He faces multiple charges for allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting his girlfriend, and later stabbing her ex-boyfriend.
The woman’s ordeal began January 18, when Bethea picked her up from work. He became angry when he learned that she had spoken to her ex-boyfriend.
“During the evening of the incident the suspect kidnapped the victim,” according to a prepared statement from Berkeley police.
“The suspect drove the victim around Berkeley and battered her—at one point sexually assaulting her. When the woman was able to escape, the suspect stole her car.”
Before she fled, she was coerced to direct Bethea to her ex-boyfriend’s residence, who was not at home. She tried to escape from the vehicle then, but she was forced back inside.
Next, the suspect drove to another location, where he purportedly forced the victim to perform oral sex and made a video of it. Afterward, the victim was physically assaulted and nearly thrown out of her car.
The victim was eventually able to escape. After she reported what happened, detectives obtained a warrant to arrest Bethea.
While searching for Bethea, detectives spoke with persons who know him and urged them to convince Bethea to surrender himself.
Bethea who lives in San Francisco turned himself in at the San Francisco County Sheriff’s Office on January 24. He was booked at Berkeley City Jail, pending transfer to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
Bethea is ineligible for release on bond. He faces multiple charges involving the woman and her ex-boyfriend including –
Kidnapping
False imprisonment by violence
Forcible oral copulation
Battery
