“On February 8th just before 1 a.m., a Placer County Sheriff’s deputy on patrol in North Auburn conducted a traffic stop on eastbound Interstate 80 and Dry Creek Road.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as 44-year old David Roy Dunbar of Dickenson, North Dakota.
As deputies attempted to detain Dunbar, he took off on foot, leading deputies on a foot pursuit across eastbound Interstate 80. After a short time, Dunbar ran back to his vehicle, where again, deputies attempted to detain him.
Dunbar continued to resist arrest, while actively trying to reach inside his vehicle. At one point, Dunbar used his left hand to reach into his waistband. After a brief struggle, deputies were able to place Dunbar under arrest.
Deputies later found Dunbar had concealed a fixed-blade knife with an approximately six inch blade in his waistband where he had been reaching. Once Dunbar and his passenger were handcuffed, deputies searched his vehicle and found a hatchet hidden in the driver’s side door, in addition to Smith and Wesson ammunition.
Fortunately, the two deputies only suffered minor injuries during Dunbar’s arrest, and will recover. This is yet another example showing how nothing is routine in the law enforcement profession. Each day can present its own potentially deadly challenges. Had the deputies not been able to efficiently restrain Dunbar, he could have attacked them using the concealed dagger in his waistband, or the hatchet in the driver’s side door, where he kept reaching.
Dunbar was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace office, battery on a peace officer with injury, carrying a concealed dagger, possession of ammo by a felon, possession of methamphetamine and heroin, and other related charges.
The passenger, 46-year old Erin Bridget McCuiston of Brookdale, was arrested for possession of a concealed dagger, possession of suspected methamphetamine, and possession of a meth pipe.”
