On February 4, 1989, a man came into an apartment in the 3100 block of Casa De Campo where a woman was asleep.
The suspect grabbed a knife from the kitchen, put the knife to the victim’s throat, raped the victim and then stabbed her “multiple times on her upper body.”
After slitting the victim’s throat, the suspect left the apartment.
In spite of the investigation that followed, no arrest was ever made in the attack. Three decades have since gone by.
However, with the advancements of DNA technology, investigators finally got a DNA match in December of 2020.
John Harris Jr. was named as the suspect and was arrested in Manteca on February 24, 2021. He was booked and his bail was set at $500,000. The victim did not know her attacker.
“After speaking with the victim 32 years later, investigators saw she was flooded with emotions by the arrest. They indicated she had not forgotten the incident and has lived with it her entire life. The victim was grateful for the persistent law enforcement effort.”
