Death at the San Diego Central Jail – Homicide Investigation Results Just In
SAN DIEGO – When Deputies at the San Diego Central Jail found inmate Lazaro Alvarez (40) unresponsive in his jail cell, just after 4 AM on 11/22/2020 – rapid action by Deputies and Medical Staff took place. Lifesaving measures were employed while awaiting relief by Fire Department personnel.
An ambulance transported Alvarez from 1173 Front Street to a local area hospital. “Unfortunately, Alvarez was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving,” said Lieutenant Thomas Seiver.
An immediate investigation was launched by the Homicide Unit for the man who’d been booked into custody by the San Diego Police Department the day before, for the charge of 602 PC – Trespassing.
First, there was no foul-play evidence discovered by Investigators. Next, the Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy. When drugs are detected, lab cultures take time.
Reports released on the evening of 03/04/2021 determined fentanyl and methamphetamine toxicity, along with sudden cardiac arrest due to acute myocardial infarction, to be the cause of death.
“The manner of death was determined to be accidental,” announced Lt. Seiver, Sheriff’s Homicide Unit. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Sheriff’s Homicide Unit (858) 285-6330.
