In January of this year a report came to the Santa Clara Police Department about an incident of identity theft. The stolen identity was used to get apartment rentals in Santa Clara and San Jose.
In addition, the suspects, “.citing financial hardship due to the pandemic, exploited the State and city moratorium on evictions and maintained the rental properties for several months without making monthly payments.”
This action resulted in over $100,000 in unpaid rent. At the same time, a rise in package and mail thefts, and vehicle burglaries, occurred at the same time as the arrival of the new tenants.
A search warrant was served on the Santa Clara apartment on January 28. Detectives found an empty gun magazine, paraphernalia and stolen mail.
On March 4 another warrant was served, this time at the San Jose apartment. Edwina Bogan and Shawnece Ford were arrested, in possession of the personal identifying information of over 100 people, forged documents, narcotics and a taser.
“Through investigation, detectives successfully investigated and stopped this crime spree and also located five additional fraudulent rentals associated to the suspects. The community’s willingness to help was instrumental in solving these crimes. This case is still active, and our detectives continue to locate victims of identity theft.”
