Man sentenced to 37 years to life in prison for 2019 murder

In the early hours of September 22, 2019 Jesse Jaramillo entered the home of Karina Paez-Smith in the 1000 block of F Street in Marysville. Jaramillo had been dating Paez-Smith’s daughter for approximately one month. Jaramillo and Paerz-Smith’s daguhter were involved in a domestic violence incident in Sacramento the day prior. Jaramillo confronted Paez-Smith and demanded to see her daughter. When Paez-Smith refused to coopertae with Jaramillo, he shot and killed her.

Jaramillo stole Paez-Smith’s vehicle and fled to areas in Northern California, including Sacramento and Oroville. Detetctives with the Marysville Police Department quickly identified Jaramillo as a suspect in Paez-Smith’s murder. Jaramillo was tracked to an area in Butte county and he was later apprehended by deputies with the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.

Jaramillo entered into a plea agreement with the Yuba County District Attorney’s Office in early 2021. As part of the plea agreement, Jaramillo plead guilty to the murder of Karina Paez-Smith. On the afternoon of Friday May 7, 2021, Yuba County Superior Court Judge Julia L. Scrogin issued Jaramillo an aggregate sentence of 37 years to life in prison.
