A Monterey man has been arrested following an attempted robbery and subsequent standoff at a local barbershop, according to police.
On the afternoon of May 16, police responded to the SuperCuts on Alvarado Street on a report of a robbery. Once officers were on scene, a patron who’d fled the business told them a man — later identified as 37-year-old Masimo Lopez — was inside demanding money and threatening to kill everyone.
Officers surrounded the business and evacuated all patrons still inside until only Lopez remained.
At that point, they began negotiations, which Lopez reportedly refused and to which he responded by saying he was armed, though he wouldn’t say what type of weapon he was carrying. Officers were also able to see that Lopez was keeping his right hand inside his jacket pocket.
Eventually, officers were able to make entry and subdue Lopez while he was distracted, ultimately discovering that he was not armed.
Lopez was arrested and booked on suspicion of attempted robbery, criminal threats, and threatening a police officer.
