San Mateo Police Department Arrest Carjacking Suspect

“San Mateo, CA – The San Mateo Police Department arrested a suspect associated with auto theft and other charges after a short pursuit ended in a collision.

On Friday, June 11, 2021 at 09:11 p.m., San Mateo Police officers were dispatched to the 200 block of N. San Mateo Dr. on the report of a carjacking. Officers quickly arrived and located a victim, who had been pistol whipped and pepper sprayed before being forcefully removed him his vehicle by the suspect.

The trauma left the victim confused about some specific details about the crime, including where it occurred. The officers worked diligently with the victim and were able to determine the carjacking took place near 7 E. Santa Inez Ave. As officers saturated the area, they noticed the victim’s vehicle traveling southbound on N. El Camino Real.

Officers pursued the vehicle, but the suspect driver failed to stop when signaled by police, leading them on a short vehicle pursuit. While turning onto Folkstone Ave. from S. Amphlett Blvd., the suspect driver lost control of the vehicle and drove into the curb. The vehicle rolled over several times and collided with two parked vehicles. The suspect driver then fled on foot.

SMPD officers and outside agencies set up a perimeter and conducted a thorough search for the suspect. A short time later, a California Highway Patrol (CHP) helicopter notified SMPD Dispatch that it had located a subject lying on the roof of a nearby residence.

The subject, who was later identified as a 16-year-old male, was safely arrested. He was later booked into Hillcrest Juvenile Hall. This remains an open and active investigation.
