June 12, 2021 – Santa Barbara County, Ca.
At a time in life when his age-group peers are making summer vacation plans or are thinking about furthering their education or are venturing out into the world of working adults, 18-year-old Santa Maria resident Fernando Cervantes Camarillo is now contemplating the concrete confines of a cell in the Santa Barbara County Jail.
It all started on the night of May 30th , when, according to Santa Maria Police Department spokesperson Lt. Terry Flaa, uniformed patrol officers responded to a 911 report of gunfire erupting at the residential neighborhood intersection of Curryer and Boone streets. As they arrived on the scene, officers discovered Santa Maria resident Rafael Santos Toribio “lying in the street with a gunshot wound.”
Emergency Medical Services personnel were immediately summoned to the scene. They quickly transported Toribio to Marion Medical Center where, upon arrival, he was pronounced dead.
The immediately ensuing police investigation indicated that the shooting was the result of “an altercation that occurred between Torivio and a group of individuals”. Witness statements and additional evidence lead SMPD detectives to identify Camarillo as the principal suspect responsible for the shooting.
Just an hour later, Camarillo was contacted at his residence and taken into custody. He was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail, where he was booked on a charge of murder, with his bail set at $2,000,0000.
