“Today, at about 1235, DNSO Dispatch received a report of someone that had been stabbed near the 1800 block of Muncy Lane.
It is believed that the victim was outside of his residence and approached for unknown reasons by the suspect. The suspect ultimately cut the victims head with a knife and fled on foot.
Several members of the DNSO responded to the area and quickly set up a perimeter. Crescent City Fire & Rescue and Del Norte Ambulance provided medical attention to the victim. He was given emergency first aid and transported to the hospital. Crescent City CHP and the Crescent City Police Department also assisted with a more expanded perimeter.
A backpack was located and believed to contain identification belonging to the suspect. He was recognized as someone that possibly fled from law enforcement yesterday after a traffic infraction.
DNSO command staff made a request for a CCPD K9 Unit. Sergeant Lopez and K9 Lieutenant Kai responded to the scene. After being briefed and while be escorted a thorough search of the area was initiated.
Within moments K9 Lieutenant Kai alerted and a suspect matching the description was located, hiding. He surrendered and Andrew Essary (35 Years old) was taken into custody. A knife was found near him and was also collected.
Sheriff Apperson said “This is a perfect example of our local first responders coming together for a common purpose. It serves as a reminder that even though lighthearted rivalries exist, the communities we serve are fortunate to have agencies that collaborate seamlessly, especially when it counts. As always, I can’t help but be proud of the professional and expeditious response displayed by our deputies and everyone that helped them today. I also want to thank the neighbors on Muncy that were eager to assist law enforcement and played a vital role. As always, a special thanks goes out to our dispatcher that was providing us all with the information we needed.”
