“The Mono County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the assistance of the public with an arson and child endangerment case. During the July 4th weekend an unidentified male suspect driving late 80s early 90s tan-colored Chevrolet/GMC extended cab pickup followed a white Ford pickup into the Twin Lakes General Store parking lot.
The Ford pickup had a flag attached to the rear of the pickup and when one of the victims entered the store the suspect exited his vehicle and approached the Ford.
The suspect then lit the flag on fire using what appeared to be an accelerant causing the flag to catch on fire. The driver of the Ford was near the vehicle but did not see the suspect. However, the Ford was occupied by three children at the time of the incident.
The suspect is described as a White male adult about 60-70 years old, average build, wearing a brown cowboy hat, dark-colored plaid shirt, dark undershirt with a red/gray stripe, camouflage pants, and dark-colored shoes. After lighting the flag on fire, the suspect entered the store and used a credit card returning to a “Gary Bench.” Investigators are working on obtaining additional information on Mr. Bench.
If you have any information regarding the suspect or possibly witnessed the incident, please contact the Mono County Sheriff’s Department at 760-932-7549 X7 and ask for Investigator Pelichowski or Torres.”
