A clear indication that prior felony arrests and encounters with society’s penal system by an individual aren’t always effective in preventing further criminal violations was the 9:30 p.m. August 11th arrest of 19-year-old Bakersfield resident Bryan McDermand-Wyland in the City of Santa Maria.
According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Lt. Brad Welch, , McDermand-Wyland was the subject of an intense search by Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department patrol units who had been alerted by a 911 Emergency report of “an armed man who had kidnapped his girlfriend and was holding her at gunpoint inside his vehicle.”
Responding deputies spotted the vehicle and conducted “a high-risk stop” as McDermand- Wyland drove through Santa Maria. Upon contact, McDermand-Wyland was taken into custody and his “adult girlfriend” was “freed without requiring medical attention.” The ensuing search of McDermand-Wyland’s vehicle revealed him to be in possession of “narcotics, stolen license plates, false identification cards, and a loaded Cobra .380-caliber handgun.”
McDermand-Wyland was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail, where he was booked on charges of kidnapping, threatening crime with intent to terrorize, preventing or dissuading a witness, exhibiting a firearm, possessing a stolen vehicle, vehicle theft, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Facing multiple felonies, his bail was set at $100,000.
