ANTIOCH — A teenager suspected of committing an armed carjacking was apprehended after he ran inside a hospital to hide. The outpatient hospital had to be evacuated while authorities searched for the possibly still armed suspect.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded before it was all over. On September 30 at 11:38 a.m., Antioch officers were advised that a vehicle carjacked in Oakland was traveling through Antioch. It was heading eastbound on
Highway 4, near Somerville Road.
When Antioch officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled at a high rate of speed continuing towards Laurel Road. While being pursued the driver of the stolen vehicle sideswiped another vehicle.
The carjacking suspect continued driving to John Muir Health Urgent Care Center, located on Balfour Road in Brentwood. Upon arrival at the hospital, he exited from vehicle and ran into the hospital.
Three law enforcement agencies responded to the hospital. It was evacuated, while Antioch and Brentwood police officers searched for the suspect. Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office deputies also assisted during the search.
The suspect was located hiding inside a bathroom. He was taken into custody without further incident. The suspect is a 17-year-old male.
This juvenile suspected of committing an armed carjacking was turned over to Oakland police for further processing.
