It’s a sad commentary on the state of some personal relationships when a verbal argument ends with one of those involved bringing forth a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and firing a shot into the air. While such a display of frustration may certainly quiet others in the area, it happens to be illegal.
That eternal verity may have escaped the attention of 28-year-old Jaeren McCullough on the morning of October 5 th when, according to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sr. Deputy Matt Smith, McCullough allegedly “fired one round into the air” during a heated conversation with others in his residence while “holding a small child.” That gunshot lead to a 911 Emergency call that summoned deputies to the scene.
Upon arrival at McCullough’s Camarillo residence, patrol deputies discovered that he had “fled the area with the firearm to avoid arrest.” The ensuing investigation and search of the area throughout the day brought deputies into contact with McCullough, whereupon he was taken into custody and found to be “in possession of methamphetamine.” An extensive search of McCullough’s vehicle and the surrounding area helped deputies to “locate the firearm and other evidence” supporting his arrest.
McCullough was transported to Ventura County Jail, where he was booked on charges of possession of a controlled substance, obstructing peace officers, negligent discharge of a firearm, concealing evidence, unlawful transfer of a firearm, and child abuse. He remains in custody with his bail set at $50,000.
