PITTSBURG — Police recovered a stolen car with a one-year-old baby inside and later arrested a woman suspected of stealing the car. The baby girl was safely reunited with her family.
The car was stolen November 11 at 5:45 p.m. It happened in the parking lot of La Piñata Restaurant, located at 95 Bliss Avenue.
The baby’s father was standing outside the car with the engine running. He was a few feet away chatting with another man.
A woman approached them asking for a cigarette, but they didn’t have any. Next, she walked towards the car, got inside, and drove away, with the baby secured inside a car seat.
She sped away towards Railroad Avenue, as the incident was recorded on video by a surveillance camera at the restaurant.
Shortly after 7:30 p.m., police located the car abandoned near Army Street, with the baby unharmed. However, the suspect was not at the scene.
The vehicle theft and kidnapping were posted on social media. A concerned resident reported seeing a woman matching the description of the suspect, walking along Harbor Street.
Officers located the suspect identified as 24-year-old Nataly A. Ayala, who lives in Concord. Ayala was arrested November 12 at 12:45 a.m.
Ayala was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility, where she remains in custody in lieu of $100,000 bond. She faces charges for kidnapping and vehicle theft, pending review by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office.
This is Ayala’s third arrest this year. She was arrested in September, on suspicion of tampering with a vehicle. In August, she was arrested for drugs.
