“Last night just before 7:00 p.m., Watch C officers responded to the Walgreens, located in the 8900 block of Trautwein Road, regarding an attempt carjacking that had just occurred. While officers were speaking to the female victim, Air-One located a male matching the suspect description walking in a parking lot at a business complex across from Walgreens. When the officers tried to contact the male, he took off running but was safely detained a short distance away.
The officers investigation revealed the suspect had been watching the victim as she entered and later exited the Walgreens. The suspect ran up behind the victim as she was getting into her car and tried to pull her out. The victim was able to scream and fight off the suspect who immediately ran away after the encounter.
Shelton Williams, 22-years-old from Riverside, was arrested and booked into jail for attempted carjacking and resisting arrest. He is currently being held on $60,000 bail.
With the holiday season quickly approaching, here are a few safety tips when you go out shopping:
Park and walk in well-lit areas.
Walk with confidence, be aware of people around you, and know where you parked.
Always lock your car doors after leaving or entering your car.
Have your keys in your hand so that you do not have to linger before entering your car. Check the back seat before you get in.
Don’t leave packages on the car seats. Keep packages out of sight in the trunk.
