A 45-year-old man from Los Angeles has been arrested after carjacking a vehicle at a Garden Grove Bank and leading officers on a pursuit throughout Orange County.
The incident began in the parking lot of a bank located in the area of Harbor Boulevard and Garden Grove Boulevard, at about 11:34 PM on November 27th. A female got out of the vehicle in order to use the ATM, while the male driver waited inside.
At that time, suspect William McNair “approached the male driver and dragged him from the driver-side of his vehicle,” according to the release. McNair then got in the car and sped out of the parking lot, nearly hitting the male victim in the process.
It didn’t take long for police to catch up; Garden Grove “Gang Suppression Unit (GSU) Officers were in the area and saw the vehicle speed past them as the call was being broadcasted on the radio,” according to the release. Not surprisingly, McNair was not interested in complying with officers’ attempts to stop him and instead led them on a pursuit through two cities.
McNair’s joyride finally ended when officers were able to box him in, thanks to the assistance from a Newport Beach Police Department BearCat. He continued resisting officers’ commands and “non-lethal means” used to encourage his surrender, but K-9 Kody finally persuaded him to call it quits.
McNair was arrested and later positively identified as the carjacking suspect by the two victims
