A man was recently arrested in Kings County after allegedly leading a deputy on a high-speed pursuit following a traffic stop for expired registration, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Just after 11 PM on Tuesday, December 14, a deputy pulled over a Honda Civic for expired registration in the area of 10th Avenue and Second Street in Hanford.
The driver, later identified as Anthony Serna (39), initially pulled over but then sped away when the deputy got out of their patrol car, initiating a pursuit that occasionally reached 70+ MPH and during which Serna allegedly ran several stop signs, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The pursuit finally ended when Serna struck a parked SUV, at which point he abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot.
Deputies and backup officers from Hanford PD found Serna trying to hide in a nearby apartment, where they arrested him without further incident. Deputies then searched the Honda he’d been driving and reportedly found a modified rifle and over a quarter of a pound of marijuana.
Serna, whom the Sheriff’s Office reports is a convicted felon and thus prohibited from owning firearms, was ultimately booked on suspicion of felony pursuit, driving on a suspended license, hit-and-run, and felon in possession of a firearm, among other charges. His bail was set at $85,000.
