BERKELEY — A man in custody in connection with shootings was identified as a murder suspect in yet another criminal case. The suspect 21-year-old Oakland resident, Charles E. Jones, is being held ineligible for release on bond at Santa Rita Jail.
Jones was already behind bars at the time of his latest arrest on January 25. He was in custody for an earlier shooting incident. He is a suspected member of a gang involved in several shootings in South Berkeley.
His most recent charges concern the murder of 19-year-old Sereinat’e Henderson in October 2020. Henderson was pregnant and driving passed a school with her infant son when she was shot in her head.
Her 14-year-old brother and mother were also inside the vehicle when multiple shots were fired. Evidence gathered from the crime scene and various electronic records implicated Jones in the murder case.
A painstaking investigation culminated in Jones’ latest criminal charges. On January 26, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office filed a long list of charges against Jones.
In addition to murder, he faces charges for shooting at an occupied vehicle, attempted murder, and assault with a semi-automatic firearm. Plus, he faces numerous enhanced criminal charges.
Jones has been behind bars since his arrest in November 2020, in connection with another shooting near a South Berkeley apartment building. In his prior arrest, he was found in possession of a pistol and crack cocaine.
