NOVATO — A man with facial tattoos was arrested at a restaurant after nearby Umpqua Bank was robbed last month. The bank was held-up at knifepoint by a rather unique-looking fellow who fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Police responded when an alarm signaled a robbery at the bank located at 999 Grant Avenue on January 26. Witnesses provided information leading to the identification and rapid arrest of the suspect.
The direction the bank robber fled was disseminated to multiple responding units. Officers saturated the bank vicinity within minutes. The suspect met his comeuppance with the law soon thereafter.
A man matching the description of the suspect was located a few blocks away from the bank. He was spotted sitting inside McDonald’s restaurant, located at 7340 Redwood Boulevard.
Officers surrounded the restaurant. The suspect complied with instructions and was arrested at 4:10 p.m. Evidence linking him to the robbery was found in his possession.
The suspect is David N. Baty, a 61-year-old resident of Novato. Baty was booked into Marin County Jail at 5:44 p.m.
Baty has a prior criminal history. In addition to parole violation, he faces open charges for the robbery. He remains inside the county lockup, with no bail set, pending a court appearance this week.
