San Mateo PD: Man with outstanding warrants asked officers to shoot him
A wanted felon was recently arrested after being found sleeping in a car in San Mateo, according to police.
On the morning of Sunday, January 30, officers responded to investigate reports of an individual who appeared to be living out of a vehicle on the 800 block of Prospect Row. Officers contacted the individual, identified as 22-year-old Joshua Gomez, and noticed a suspected methamphetamine pipe in plain view in the driver’s door handle, police said.
After a records check revealed that Gomez was on parole and currently had two no-bail warrants out for his arrest, officers asked to step out of the vehicle and placed him in handcuffs. At that point, police said, Gomez became anxious, telling them there was a gun in the car. He began to struggle and reportedly asked the officers to shoot him, police said.
Officers searched the vehicle and reportedly found an unregistered gun in a backpack with a bullet in the chamber, along with a fully loaded magazine. Police say they also found several credit cards that didn’t belong to Gomez, which they are looking into further.
Gomez was ultimately booked at the San Mateo County Jail on several charges including felon in possession of a firearm and possession of methamphetamine.
