February 22, 2022 – Ventura County, Ca.
As if the aging process isn’t enough of a challenge to a population of folks growing older who find themselves in need of care and housing in an “assisted living” facility, the February 19 th arrest of 64-year-old Camarillo resident Raymond Cortinas may make one wonder about the definition of “assisted.”
According to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau spokesman Sgt. William Hutton, it was just prior to 9:00 a.m. when a 911 Emergency call reported “a fight” on a Camarillo neighborhood sidewalk. Responding deputies discovered a 63-year-old man “suffering from multiple stab wounds to his body, along with a severed ear.”
With emergency medical services quickly on the scene to transport the victim to a local area hospital for treatment of serious injuries, the immediately ensuing investigation indicated that Cortinas had attacked him “for no apparent reason” in spite of the fact that both Cortinas and the victim are acquaintances residing in the same elder-care assisted living facility.
Cortinas was arrested at the scene and transported to Ventura County Jail, where he was booked on charges of felony attempted murder and felony mayhem. He remains in custody with his bail set at $1,500,000.
