Armed Anaheim man suspected of domestic violence killed in officer-involved shooting
An armed man was fatally shot by police outside a home in Anaheim after a standoff that lasted over five hours.
The man, currently only identified as a 41-year-old Anaheim resident, had one firearm on him at the time of the shooting, which occurred on the morning of March 2nd. Another firearm was found inside the residence, located in the 600 block of South Resh Street.
“After the shooting, police personnel transitioned to providing lifesaving efforts to the suspect but he was declared deceased on scene,” according to Sgt. Shane Carringer in the Anaheim Police Department press release.
Police were initially called out around 9:45 PM the previous day about “a male suspect who had threatened a female with a gun” and “had already possibly fired the gun.”
“Arriving officers located the female victim and the initial investigation determined the male was suspected of committing domestic violence, an assault with a deadly weapon, and firing at an inhabited dwelling,“ said Sgt. Carringer. “The victim described firearms possessed by the suspect to officers.”
Officers had the woman evacuated, as well as nearby residences. Deputies subsequently attempted to talk to the suspect and persuade him to exit the residence peacefully; instead, he refused to comply, barricaded himself inside, and possibly fired a weapon. A SWAT team and Tactical Negotiation personnel were called out to help try to deescalate him, beginning a standoff the lasted for the next several hours. “As the standoff continued the suspect was seen in possession of
multiple suspected firearms,” continues Sgt. Carringer in the release.
Finally, at nearly 4 AM, the man came out of the residence. At that point, four police officers opened fire, killing the man.
No officers were physically injured during the incident. The officer-involved shooting will be investigated by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
