According to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sergeant Beau Rodriguez in what may earn the title of Understatement of the Year, “there has been an increase of illegal firearms activities in Ventura County.”
The events of February 26 th leading to the arrests of 26-year-old Santa Paula resident Gregory Nunez, 27-year-old Santa Paula resident Olga Acosta, and 37-year-old Fillmore resident Ricardo Magana certainly support that assessment.
It was just after 9:00 a.m. on that date when deputies assigned to the Ventura County Post Release Offender Supervision (PROS) Unit made an unannounced visit at the apartment residence of Nunez under the terms of his probation pursuant to his history of “vandalism and weapons violations.”
Hanging out in the apartment with Nunez that morning were Acosta and Magana, both of whom were identified and recognized by one of the deputies on the scene as having outstanding warrants of their own. Magana was sought on an “active felony warrant for stolen vehicle violations” while Acosta had her own outstanding felony warrants on unspecified charges.
As the three individuals were taken into custody, a search of the apartment led to the discovery of “a Ruger 57 semi-automatic handgun loaded with high-velocity ammunition capable of penetrating body armor” bearing no serial number. The gun was booked into evidence as Nunez, Acosta, and Magana were transported to Ventura County Jail where they were booked on a charge of possession of an illegal firearm and on their outstanding warrants.
