“On Sunday, while covering for our Salinas PD family and to ensure the safety of the community, we received a call around 11 am to assist Salinas Fire with a medical aid call at a motel on Kern Street.
Once we arrived, we met 27-year-old Marcos Piczao of Salinas. He was found intoxicated inside his car. As he was not observed to be driving, a family member was contacted to come and take care of Marcos and his vehicle.
About fifteen minutes after Marcos was released to his family, they called 911 and said he had taken the keys and driven away from his residence again. A short time later, patrol units in the area located Marcos near East Market Street and Williams Road where he was pulled over.
During the traffic stop and attempt to arrest Marcos, he fought with a Deputy and a Watsonville Police Officer. He was able to fight his way back to his vehicle, start it, and drive away with the deputy still trying to get him out of the car.
The deputy was taken for a ride as Marcos sped away. The deputy was able to free himself from the moving car, hitting the ground and sustaining moderate injuries. Additional units arrived, and Marcos’s vehicle was located in the area of Quilla Street and 2nd Avenue.
This time, Marcos did not yield to the traffic stop and he led deputies and officers on a short pursuit. He was driving extremely recklessly, ultimately crashing into a parked car that was, fortunately, unoccupied.
The crash occurred near Paloma Avenue and Tampa Street – but that was not the end of the pursuit. Marcos then started running but was soon captured.
A search of his car revealed a firearm inside.
Marcos was booked into the Monterey County jail for PC 245(c) – Assault on a Peace Officer, PC 148.10(a) – Resisting Arrest with Serious Injury, PC 29800(a) – Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and PC 2800.2(a)/PC2800.4 – Evading (reckless)/Evading (drive on the wrong side of the road).
A bail enhancement was requested and granted placing Marcos’ bail at $1,000,000.00. Both the Deputy and Watsonville PD Officer were treated for their injuries and are doing well. They are both expected to make a full recovery.”
