A man has been arrested in Redding after allegedly rolling his vehicle and severely injuring his passenger whilst driving under the influence, according to police.
Just before 1 AM on Friday, March 18, officers responded to a report of a single-vehicle rollover collision at the intersection of Placer and San Francisco Streets. A man identified as 23-year-old Davin Chavez had seemingly lost control of the vehicle while allegedly speeding down westbound Placer Street, left the roadway, struck a large boulder, and rolled the vehicle multiple times, police said.
Officers tested Chavez’s blood-alcohol level at the scene and found that his BAC was nearly three times the legal limit, police said.
Chavez’s passenger, a woman whose name has not been released, reportedly had to be extracted from the overturned vehicle by fire personnel. She was hospitalized with multiple injuries that, while quite serious, were fortunately not life-threatening.
Chavez was medically cleared, arrested, and booked on suspicion of felony DUI causing injury, as well as a charge of driving on a suspended license.
