While some felons enjoying freedom pursuant to the terms of their parole manage to walk the straight-and-narrow in terms of avoiding any criminal activity, there is a percentage of folks who just can’t seem to refrain from violating the rules of the game.
According to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Beau Rodriguez, 32-year-old Ventura resident Jose Guerrero and 27-year-old Port Hueneme resident Daniel Duarte, both of whom found themselves in handcuffs on the morning of March 9 th , are among those who don’t appear to take their parole terms too seriously.
It all began with VCSD Sheriff’s Gang Unit detectives—tasked with “protecting communities from criminal street gang terrorism” through the active pursuit of “illegal firearm activities—conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Guerrero. The cops, familiar with Guerrero’s parole status based upon a prior conviction for Voluntary Manslaughter, made contact with him, as well as with Durate and local area transients 38-year-old Justin Holbrook and 29-year-old Janet Avalos, and promptly initiated a search of Guerrero’s vehicle.
That search led to the discovery of “a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun,” possession of which is prohibited for both Duarte and Guerrero. The cops quickly determined that Guerrero had additional property located in an Oxnard storage unit; a subsequent search later that day had the cops finding “a 7.63 caliber assault rifle and ammunition,” also prohibited under the terms of Guerrero’s parole.
Guerrero and Duarte were transported to Ventura County Jail, where they were booked on multiple misdemeanor warrants, conspiracy to commit a crime, and felony firearms violations.
