Palo Alto, CA  After an extensive investigation that resulted in an arrest warrant being issued, police have arrested the driver of a vehicle that collided with a tree while fleeing an illegal sideshow last November.

The incident occurred on Friday, November 26, 2021 at about 1:06 a.m.  To read details distributed at the time, refer to the news release we issued later that morning.  Both the driver and his female passenger were eventually released from a local hospital.

Following a lengthy and detailed investigation by our Special Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) team, investigators submitted the case to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office for review.  On March 8, 2022, a Santa Clara County Superior Court judge issued an arrest warrant for the driver, 26-year-old Jonathan Millan Sanchez of East Palo Alto, for four felony counts: assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, evading causing serious bodily injury, driving under the influence of alcohol while causing bodily injury to another person, and driving under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs while causing bodily injury to another person.  Police did not request charges against the female passenger.

Officers and detectives repeatedly attempted to locate Millan Sanchez throughout March in an effort to serve the warrant.  Those efforts were unsuccessful.  On Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at about 6:00 p.m., officers from the Redwood City Police Department located Millan Sanchez during a vehicle stop on University Avenue at Runnymede Street in East Palo Alto in which he was a passenger.  Palo Alto officers responded to take custody of him and booked him into the Santa Clara County Main Jail pursuant to the warrant.  His booking photo is attached to this release..

It should be noted that further review of this incident revealed information not known at the time the original news release was distributed.  The review showed that after the suspect vehicle’s collision with the tree, one officer pursued the remaining fleeing vehicles for a matter of seconds on Embarcadero Road before they entered Highway 101 and escaped, while other personnel tended to the occupants of the suspect vehicle.  Police have not been able to identify any of the outstanding vehicles or their drivers or occupants.”
