Nighttime driving along U.S. 101 north of the City of Santa Barbara is always an adventure in danger. The majority of vehicles—including the constant plethora of 18-wheel big rigs—commonly travel at high rates of speed well in excess of posted limits, which provides CHP and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department deputies with plenty of things to keep them busy.
But on the night of April 7 th , the usual vehicular mayhem and speeding citations took a back seat to what CHP was alerted to by a 911 Emergency call from a passing motorist. According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Raquel Zick, CHP patrol units, SBSD deputies, and a Santa Barbara County Fire Department Rescue Team were quickly dispatched to the U.S. Highway 1 exit ramp where they discovered an adult female suffering “stab wounds to her face and neck.”
While firefighters provided care to her at the scene, medical support and an ambulance were quickly called to the scene. The woman was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment of her injuries.
The ensuing investigation indicated that the woman was behind the wheel of her car heading northbound when her husband, later identified as 33-year-old Los Osos resident Timothy Alcantar — the only other occupant of the vehicle — “suddenly began stabbing her with a screwdriver.” The woman reportedly brought the car to an immediate halt and alighted from it and with all due alacrity ran off into the night.
At that point, Alcantar “jumped into the driver’s seat” and drove away. The following day, on April 8 th , the suspect vehicle was located on a downtown Lompoc street, just “a couple blocks from the police station.” Alcantar was soon located, taken into custody, and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail where he was booked on assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder. He remains in custody on a no-bail hold.
