WALNUT CREEK — Police arrested a man and recovered a machete that he allegedly used during a failed attempted robbery. The incident occurred last week at a Target store located near a downtown train station.
Officers responded to a report of a man with a machete. It seems the suspect brandished the machete while attempting to open a cash register in the electronics department. Although employees and shoppers at Target were terrified, no injuries were reported.
The suspect has been identified as Angel A. Rodriguez, 30, a resident of Richmond. Rodriguez failed to get any money. His plans apparently changed abruptly when the police showed up at the store located on North Main Street.
Responding officers pursued Rodriguez on foot for a short distance. They caught up with him at a construction site, near a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station. He was detained and taken into custody on April 21 at 1: 27 p.m.
Rodriguez was booked at the Martinez Detention Facility, where he remains in custody, pending review of his charges. He was booked on suspicion of attempted robbery and for parole violation.
Incidentally, Rodriguez was also arrested April 8 in Richmond. This arrest was for carrying a concealed dagger and disobeying a domestic relations court order.
Rodriguez has a prior robbery conviction. He also has previous arrests on his record for battery in Richmond, and public intoxication in Walnut Creek.
