May 31, 2022 – Santa Barbara County, Ca.
It’s certainly no secret among those inclined toward violent criminal behavior that the use of a firearm often carries with it additional penalties over an above those attached to the underlying crime (assault, robbery, etc.) itself.
Whether or not that consideration was one made by 24-year-old Santa Maria resident Jesus Espinoza Irazqui at 1:00 a.m. on the morning of May 28 th when he found himself in an altercation may never be known. What is know, according to Santa Maria Police Department spokesman Sgt. Andy Magallon, is that all evidence indicates on East Monroe Street at that time, Irazqui was “attempting to kill another man with a machete.”
A 911 Emergency call brought SMPD patrol units to the scene, where they “located a victim in the street who had sustained multiple lacerations caused by a machete.” That victim—a 24- year-old male—was immediately transported to a local area hospital and was subsequently airlifted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. As the victim was being treated and removed from the area, witnesses to the circumstances leading up to the
deadly fight helped detectives identify Irazqui as the individual responsible for the bloody violence.
By sunrise on May 28 th , detectives made contact with Irazqui, recovered a machete believed to be the weapon he used, took him into custody, and transported him to Santa Barbara County Jail where he was booked on a charge of attempted murder. He remains in custody with his bail set at $2,000,000.
