Armed man reportedly shot by police after allegedly trying to assault officer
A man was fatally shot by an Ontario police officer at a Mobil gas station after he allegedly threatened customers, then attempted to assault the officer.
The incident occurred around 10:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 14th, at the Mobil gas station in the 4300 block of East Ontario Mills Parkway. Police received several calls about the man, who was making threats to customers while wielding a knife and demanding money. When the first officer arrived at the scene, he found the man outside and “armed with a metal weapon in each hand,” according to Ontario police. “The male immediately charged the officer, aggressively swinging the weapons in the direction towards the officer.”
The officer withdrew from the man and tried to deescalate him from behind his police vehicle. The man, however, refused to back down, and the officer opened fire.
Both the officer and paramedics rendered medical aid to the man, but he was ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene.
No officers or victims were harmed during the incident.
The two metal weapons used by the man were determined to be metal forks and recovered at the scene. The identity of the man has not yet been released.
Surveillance video outside the gas station captured the shooting.
“As outlined by Ontario Police Department policy, the shooting is being investigated by the Ontario Police Department in coordination with the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s office as a parallel investigation.”
