Suspect in Custody for Alleged Murder and Assault with a Deadly Weapon

MARIN CITY — Sel Charvet Butler Jr., a 27-year-old Marin City resident, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and assault with a deadly weapon, according to reports.

Butler is presently in custody for allegedly murdering Michael A. Rogers II, 42 of Oakland. Rogers was killed and at least two other persons sustained gunshot wounds on July 24. The shootings occurred at 10:05 a.m., near the intersection of Cole Drive and Drake Avenue in Marin City.

Deputies responding to reported gunfire located Rogers and a woman who were transported to a hospital for medical treatment. Rogers died at the hospital. A third person also suffering from gunshot wounds later showed up at a hospital for medical treatment.

Butler was arrested July 26 at San Francisco General Hospital shortly before 5 p.m. He was taken into custody by Marin County Sheriff’s Office deputies and booked into Marin County Jail the following day.

Butler faces open charges for murder first degree and assault with a deadly weapon likely to produce great bodily injury. He also faces charges for shooting at an inhabited dwelling/vehicle, and addict/felon in possession of a firearm.

The suspect has a violent history with prior arrests for assault, battery, threats of violence, robbery, and sex with minors. He has prior convictions and has been on and off probation several times.
